  • …. and what happens after these first three weeks?

    By then, the puppies’ eyes are open and they can just about walk! Now the mother will get them to move away from the den and eliminate elsewhere.

    But where?

    ANYWHERE but NOT in the den where the puppies all eat and sleep.

    Puppies come to us trained by their mothers. By building on what puppies have already learnt, we can house train our puppies VERY quickly

  • THE SECRET: A PROPER PUPPY PEN

    THERE ARE ONLY FOUR DIFFERENT SITUATIONS

    #1 - YOU’RE HOME

    You keep your puppy “glued” to your side. At regular intervals (maybe set your phone alarm) take your puppy to your designated place. Have treats nearby. Reward!

    #2 - YOU’RE ASLEEP

    Last thing before sleeping, take your puppy to your designated place. Have treats nearby. Reward! Place in crate with a few treats. Preferably, place the crate where your puppy can see you.

    #3 - YOU’RE AWAKE!

    In the morning IMMEDIATELY CARRY (not lead) your puppy to your designated place. Reward! (No success? Put back in the crate for ten minutes and repeat)

    #4 - YOU’RE WORKING, SHOPPING, ETC

    Build a puppy-safe day pen - as below!

    The left end is the sleeping area. Food, water, etc should be here

    The right end is the toilet area. You might want to cover the whole of that compartment with pee pads.

  • COMMON HOUSE TRAINING MISTAKES

    ❌ LETTING THE PUPPY ROAM UNSUPERVISED

    You have to EARN the joy of having a dog that can have full run of the house without supervision. Too much freedom too soon will put your training back.

    ❌ PUNISHING ACCIDENTS AFTER THE EVENT

    Can you remember what you had for breakfast or lunch five Thursdays ago? No? Your puppy doesn't remember urinating two minutes ago. So scolding after the event only damages your relationship with your puppy.

    ❌ USING PEE PADS WHEN ULTIMATELY YOU WANT HIM TO GO OUTSIDE

    Why train your dog twice!? Either take him outside to "the place". Or if you can't, use the same type of surface - grass turf, a tray of soil, etc.

    ❌INCONSISTENT ROUTINES

    Find a schedule which works for both of you. Remember, a puppy can only hold its bladder for about 1 hour for each month of age. So 3 months old? Every 3 hours. Set your phone alarm, maybe?
